An Introduction to Safety Ratings

Vehicle safety ratings are designed to inform you how well you can expect a vehicle to protect you and any of your passengers in an unfortunate collision. The two most popular rating systems are handled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The five crash tests administered by the IIHS are used to give a car a rating from poor, marginal, acceptable to good. The safest cars are designated as Top Safety Picks or Top Safety Picks+. The NHTSA uses three collision tests to give a rating from one to five stars to vehicles. They also assess how likely a car is to roll over. If you are looking for the safest vehicle, you want one that has received a five-star rating.
